Reward Track

The Reward Track is a reward system that places its emphasis on group performance rather than individual performance. It is printed onto 14 A4 sheets and displayed along a classroom wall to make a track. By meeting group targets such as 'Raising your hand to talk (not shouting out)' or 'Respecting each other (not name calling)' a token is moved along the track towards reward points. The rewards are group wide and so all pupils benefit from their collective effort. The track should culminate in a group activity such as a visit, a party or an extra play.

The track provides continual visual feedback about the group's performance.

The Reward Track was designed because in our experience some class problems appear to be in the dynamics of the groups/individuals in the class. In these situations intensive work with an individual is unlikely to pay off if they return to an environment that undermines the individual's efforts to be good. In these cases it is essential to address both the individual's needs and the environment that they operate in. The Reward Track helps to reduce the environmental reinforcers for behaviour. It is likely (and probable) that an individual will continue to try to offend i.e. name call, but the Reward Track is likely to reduce the opportunities for peer responses because they will be motivated to earn the rewards on the track.
